Take the stories
outside.

During the 2027 Sundance Film Festival, Compass Nature Experiences guides small group, bespoke immersions in the Rocky Mountain foothills: time to see & feel, to connect with nature, and to let everything you've been watching soak in.

Eleven days of stories.
One quiet place to let them land.

The 2027 Sundance Film Festival comes to Boulder on January 21–31, 2027: a gathering of bold storytelling, world premieres, and conversation. It is a lot to take in.

These experiences are made for the space in between. We step out of the city and into the foothills, where winter makes silence easy to find. You'll have room to take in the beauty, to integrate the stories around you, and to reconnect with your own sense of belonging in the natural world.

Shape your day

Make it yours.

Tell us what draws you and we'll weave it into your experience.

Photography walk

Learn to see in manual: light, composition, and patience. Bring a camera or your phone.

Animal tracking

Fresh snow writes everything down. We read who passed through, and when, whenever the snow allows.

Birding

Winter residents and visitors, found by sight and by ear.

Cold-weather gear

Borrow warm layers and gloves so you can travel light.

Add-ons depend on conditions. Mention what you'd like in your request and we'll confirm what's possible.

Reservations & cancellation

Full payment is due at the time of your confirmed reservation. Cancellations made at least 5 days in advance receive a 50% refund.

We generally don't cancel for weather. Cold and snow are part of the experience, and an invitation to meet the season at its most distinct. If severe snow makes travel to the trailhead unsafe, we'll try to reschedule for another date, or a refund will be issued.

Preferred date

Good to know

Questions, answered.

Do you cancel for bad weather?

We generally don't. Cold temperatures and possible snow are part of the experience, and an invitation to be with the distinct beauty of the season. If severe snow makes travel to the trailhead unsafe, we'll try to reschedule for another date, or a refund will be issued.

What is your cancellation policy?

Full payment is due at the time of your confirmed reservation. Cancellations made at least 5 days in advance receive a 50% refund.

What if there's no snow?

We walk. The foothills are beautiful in winter with or without snow. I'll plan the route to match conditions, using micro-spikes on ice and snowshoes when there's enough snow.

What should I wear and bring?

Warm layers, waterproof boots, a hat, gloves, and sunglasses (winter sun at elevation is bright). Micro-spikes are provided, and snowshoes when there's enough snow. If you'd like to borrow cold-weather gear, mention it in your request.

How active is it?

Easy to moderate walking at an unhurried pace. We aren't chasing distance. If you have mobility considerations, tell me and I'll shape the route around them.

Where do we meet?

In the foothills near Boulder. I'll send the exact meeting point and parking details when your date is confirmed.
